Accounting Specialist

The University of Mary invites applications for a full-time, exempt Accounting Specialist.  The Accounting Specialist assists in the daily operations of the Business Office, preparing general journal entries, reconciling accounts, assisting with the budget process, maintaining fixed assets, assisting in the development of procedures, and monitoring grant expenditures.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Properly records designated general journal entries, adjusting entries to meet closing deadlines
  • Assists with the preparation of payrolls
  • Assists with the completion of surveys
  • Maintains all fixed assets
  • Accurately and timely processes and records financial transactions in assigned areas
  • Monitors and tracks grant expenditures
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual budget
  • Assists with the IRS and year-end reporting (1096, 1099, W-2’s, 990, and 990T)
  • Develops and maintains orderly and complete files, both physical and electronic, to ensure complete documentation of all financial transactions
  • Perform other related duties as requested and assigned
  • Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Financial Affairs and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ

Qualifications Include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experienced is required

Knowledge and Skills Include:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications, especially Word and Excel
  • Preferably proficiency with Jenzabar, Info Maker, and Access
  • Attentiveness to detail and an ability to enter data accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to work within a timetable and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Tact, discretion, and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive situations and individuals
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to set priorities and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility
  • Ability to understand, interpret, explain, and apply rules and policies associated with areas of responsibility
  • Ability to organize and maintain filing system and document management databases
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise correspondence, records, reports, and other documents
