Campus Safety Officer

The Campus Safety Officer assists the coordinator with broad aspects of the daily operation and administration of the university’s safety and security department. Serving the university community as a visible uniformed representative of the department, s/he welcomes members of the community and visitors to the department and performs rounds on foot and by vehicle to secure facilities, build rapport with members of the university community, and respond to questions and concerns. S/He assists with special events and activities, monitors safety and security concerns, and enforces university policies. S/He provides oversight for the daily enforcement and administration of the university’s parking and traffic safety policies and assists the coordinator with public presentations and safety and emergency preparedness training.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Serves the safety and security needs of the university community as a professional and uniformed representative of the campus safety and security department
  • Welcomes students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the Campus Safety and Security department’s office and answers the phone in order to respond to questions, concerns, and requests for information
  • Performs rounds on foot and by vehicle to build rapport with and respond to questions and concerns from members of the community and visitors and to secure buildings and property, monitor safety and security concerns, and enforce university policies
  • Assists the coordinator with the administration of the parking and traffic programs by providing oversight for the daily enforcement and processing of parking violations
  • Assists the coordinator with safety education and emergency preparedness training
  • Assists as needed with safety and traffic control for special events and activities
  • Responds to emergencies and crisis situations as needed
  • Assists the coordinator with the planning, execution, and evaluation of the university’s annual observance of the national campus safety awareness month
  • Assists with the training and supervision of contracted security personnel
  • Provides safety escorts to students, faculty, staff, and guests as needed
  • Submits professional daily duty reports and incident reports and assists with the maintenance of departmental records and data
  • Assists with the preparation of departmental reports
  • Makes presentations about the services and programs offered by the Campus Safety and Security department to students, prospective students, parents, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Complete training for and maintains current certifications as requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

  • High school diploma required
  • Associate’s degree in safety and security, criminal justice, education, behavioral sciences preferred
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in public safety, safety education, law enforcement, private security, or other similar field and first aid/CPR certification required
  • Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the office of Student Development and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of campus safety and security services and policies
  • Ability to relate well with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Ability to effectively assess, evaluate, and manage various emergency or crisis situations
  • Ability to help develop and present effective safety education and training programs
  • Ability to supervise others
  • The appointee may be required to work substantial evening and weekend hours.
