Grounds Supervisor

The University of Mary invites applications for a full time, exempt Grounds Supervisor. The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for ensuring a high quality of routine care and continuous improvement of the University of Mary grounds. Primary responsibilities include developing, implementing, and maintaining all aspects of grounds program and management of the grounds staff.  Ancillary duties include designing and implementing landscaping improvement projects, managing contracted services, and support of other activities necessary for continued plant operations.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a robust grounds program for all routine grounds care (snow removal, seeding, fertilizing, weed control, trash pickup, cutting, trimming, watering, etc.)
  • Provide direct, daily supervision of grounds staff members
  • Perform daily grounds observations identifying opportunities to continuously improve University aesthetics
  • Design, plan, and implement landscaping improvement projects utilizing both University staff and contracted services
  • Manage grounds tools, equipment, and all University owned fleet vehicles
  • Manage contracted services for specialized grounds care
  • Implement work campus program and incorporate student workers into the grounds program
  • Other duties as assigned, including support of maintenance, custodial, and events

Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or related field; or demonstrated applicable work experience required
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications required
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively and interact with a wide variety of stakeholders required
  • 2+ years related experience required
  • 2+ years direct supervisory experience preferred
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to supervise and lead staff including scheduling, training, mentoring, and performance observations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fertilization, trimming, weed control, irrigation, and other key grounds maintenance techniques in commercial and residential environments
  • Demonstrated experience in landscape design and project implementation
  • Previous experience in equipment operation preferred (commercial mowers, skid-steer, tractor, plow, etc)
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to perform exterior work in all weather conditions. This includes operating equipment, hand tools, and performing inspections in extreme heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.  Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds routinely
  • Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the office of Financial Affairs, Physical Plant, and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ
